The Battle of Verdun: fought from 21 February to 19 December 1916 around the city of Verdun-sur-Meuse in northeast France, was one of the most important battles in World War I on the Western Front. The battle was fought between the German
and French armies. The casualties from Verdun and the impact the battle had on the French Army was a primary reason for the British starting the Battle of the Somme in July 1916 in an effort to take German pressure off of the French at Verdun.
The Meuse-Argonne Offensive: On September 26, 1918, Allied forces advanced forward onto "German positions in the Argonne Forest and along the Meuse River." Under the orders of the Allied Supreme Commander, Ferdinand Foch, General John J. Pershing took charge of the offensive with the American Expeditionary Force (AEF) as the vanguard. With mustard gas and phosgene shells being launched in the preliminary bombardment, well over 10,000 German soldiers became unable to fight or resist. Two days after the preliminary bombardment, more than 33,000 German soldiers were prisoners. Despite the damage, the Germans resisted and forced the Allied forces to settle for less than what they had desired. The Offensive was called off on September 30th but was renewed just 4 days later on October 4th. On November 11th, the Offensive was over and so too was the First World War.
